Russian assets of Poland's Canpack released from temporary management

The Russian assets of Canpack, the Polish metal packaging manufacturer, have been released from temporary management, according to a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin on 24 August. The new decree repeals an earlier one, of 31 December 2025, under which Can-Pack LLC and Can-Pack Packaging Plant LLC had been placed under the temporary management of Stalelement, a company based in Krasnodar.

The reasons for the new decision are not yet clear. Until now, foreign companies' assets had been taken out of temporary management only so that they could be sold to a Russian buyer — the sole exception being Italy's Ariston, whose foreign owner regained full control of its Russian business in 2025.

Can-Pack is one of Russia's largest producers of aluminium cans. Its plants are controlled by the US corporation Canpack Group, which exercises control through the Polish company Canpack S.A. and France's Tapon France. In the 2025 accounts of Can-Pack Packaging Plant, Canpack's beneficial owner is named as Peter Frederick Giorgi.

In Russia, Canpack has two plants producing beverage cans and lids and other packaging — one in Volokolamsk, in the Moscow region, and one in Novocherkassk, in the Rostov region.

The grounds for placing Canpack's Russian businesses under temporary management were bad-faith conduct towards its partners, the inflating of prices and support for Ukraine, the Vedomosti newspaper reported in January 2026, citing sources.
