Foreign companies manage over one third of shipping lines registered in Russia
Foreign companies operate 42 of the 113 marine shipping lines registered in Russia. This was stated by Andrey Tarasenko, head of the Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport (Rosmorrechflot), as reported by TASS.
"A total of 113 marine shipping lines are registered in Russia, 42 of which are operated by foreign companies," he said.
Tarasenko added that the government is working on additional measures to regulate the operation of foreign container companies in the country, while also taking steps to support and develop the Russian container transport sector.
A shipping line refers to regular service between seaports provided by a shipping company to transport cargo or passengers.
In October, it was reported that CMA CGM (France), the world's third-largest container line, had announced the inclusion of St. Petersburg in its Finland Express shuttle service calling at Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Kotka, Helsinki, and Tallinn. The company was planning to return to Russia through its Singapore-based subsidiary, CNC. This news sparked a discussion about protecting domestic shipping operators who had stepped in to fill the voids left by the departure of foreign companies.
However, CMA CGM's return, scheduled for 17 November, has not yet taken place. The container ship North, which was supposed to arrive at Container Terminal 1 in the Great Port of St. Petersburg, took a different route and sailed to Bremerhaven, Germany, bypassing the Russian harbour.
