More than half of Russians found no substitute for departed foreign brands
More than half of Russians have not found a domestic alternative to foreign brands that have left Russia, a survey by CDEK.Shopping has found, RBC reports. Specifically, 53 % of respondents said they were unable to find an adequate Russian substitute for their favourite foreign brands.
Over the past year, a third of those surveyed ordered goods from brands that have exited Russia once or twice. To buy such goods, 31 % of respondents use delivery services from abroad. Another 21 % buy from Russian resale shops, while 16 % purchase from private resellers.
According to the survey, sportswear and mass-market brands proved to be in highest demand. Among the most sought-after foreign brands, 34 % of respondents named Nike, while 24 % each named H&M and Gucci. Survey participants said they could not name a full-fledged domestic replacement for Nike, Adidas, New Balance, H&M, Zara, Levi's and Uniqlo.
The study involved 1,500 people. The survey was conducted from 15 to 25 August via the CDEK.Shopping platform.
After the military conflict in Ukraine began in February 2022, many foreign companies announced they were leaving Russia or suspending operations there. According to RBC Market Research, around 115 foreign chain operators have left Russia since February 2022, including H&M, Uniqlo and companies belonging to the Inditex group, which owned the Zara and Bershka brands, among others. Luxury brands belonging to the French holding companies LVMH — including Dior, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and Guerlain — and Kering, which owns Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen, have also left Russia.
