Media reveal which foreign manufacturers wish to assemble autos in Russia
Eight automakers may come to Russia and start assembling their vehicles there, Autonews reports. They are South Korea's KGM, China's Rox, Bestune, GAC, BAIC, MG, Changan, and the Volga brand.
For instance, according to Autonews, KGM is the now only "non-Chinese" foreign manufacturer operating in Russia, but its four models are imported from China. In the near future, the production of Korean cars is to be launched at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad, the publication says.
Rox plans to make a final decision on car production in Russia in 2026. It is considering sites that already have experience in producing premium cars.
Bestune (part of the FAW automobile concern) has not yet disclosed where the production of its models may launch.
According to unofficial information cited by Autonews, GAC may choose the AGR Group plant in St. Petersburg as a possible site for vehicle assembly, although the company has not yet made any official decision.
China's BAIC is already producing vehicles at the Avtotor plant, but now the company plans to launch full-cycle auto production there, i.e. the plant will also perform welding and painting of BAIC vehicle bodies.
Vehicles of the British-Chinese MG brand (part of the SAIC concern) are planned to be produced, according to preliminary data, under the Moskvich brand at the plant of the same name.
Changan has been negotiating with Avtotor on making its Chinese vehicles locally since early 2025, but assembly has not yet started.
Finally, Passenger Car Production JSC plans to launch the production of vehicles under the revived Volga brand. In 2024 it was planned that the aforementioned Changan would become its production partner, but the project stalled, and "now it is not ruled out that Geely models bearing Volga emblems will start rolling off the assembly line of the Nizhny Novgorod plant", Autonews writes.
