Russia grants Aeroflot approval to buy Lufthansa’s stake in Aeromar in-flight catering firm
Aeroflot has been given the green light to acquire a stake in Aeromar, the country's largest in-flight catering provider, currently held by Germany’s Lufthansa, a presidential decree showed.
The flag carrier may acquire 4,900 ordinary shares of the company owned by the German firm Truffle 2 GmbH (an affiliate of Lufthansa), according to the document. The decision was made under Russia’s special economic measures’ regime introduced in response to Western sanctions.
Aeromar is based at Sheremetyevo Airport. Aeroflot already owns a 51% stake in the company. Lufthansa said in September 2022 it planned to sell its share in Aeromar.
In September 2025, Aeroflot CEO Sergey Aleksandrovsky said the company had received antitrust approval to buy a 49% stake in Aeromar from Lufthansa. As a result, the airline will now become the sole owner of the in-flight catering provider.
Aeromar’s revenue in 2024, in accordance with Russian accounting standards (RAS), rose 37% to 19.4 billion rubles, while it posted a net loss of more than 511 million rubles versus a profit of 63 million rubles a year earlier.
Aeroflot earlier bought shares from Lufthansa in another in-flight catering provider – Krasnoyarsk-based Aeromil – for 56.4 million rubles.
Aeromar was founded in 1989 as the Soviet Union’s second joint venture with a U.S. partner following McDonald’s one. The Soviet founder was the Central Office for International Air Transport “Aeroflot” (51%), while the U.S. side was represented by Marriott In-Flight Services, a subsidiary of the Marriott hotel chain (49%). Marriott as a shareholder was replaced in 1996 by a joint venture between Lufthansa and Canada's Onex Food Service.
