Italy's Tecnimont becomes co-defendant in EuroChem's RUB 203 billion lawsuit
The Moscow Arbitrazh (Commercial) Court has granted the request of EuroChem Severo-Zapad-2 LLC to make the Italian company Tecnimont a co-defendant in EuroChem's lawsuit against Tecnimont's Russian subsidiary, MT Russia LLC, according to the arbitration case file, RBC reports.
"The granting of the request to make Tecnimont S.p.A. a co-defendant in the lawsuit will allow EuroChem Severo-Zapad-2 to seek joint and several recovery of the entire debt amount and its losses, as well as potentially apply an injunction against the Tecnimont group in Russia, the CIS countries, BRICS countries and other friendly jurisdictions," EuroChem Severo-Zapad-2 told RBC.
In September 2025, EuroChem Severo-Zapad-2 filed a lawsuit in the Moscow Arbitrazh (Commercial) Court against MT Russia, with MT Russia's parent company Tecnimont appearing as a third party in the case. EuroChem is seeking to recover RUB 202.7 billion.
In 2020, EuroChem and Tecnimont signed a contract for the design and construction of an ammonia and urea production plant in Kingisepp, Leningrad Region. In August 2022, EuroChem Severo-Zapad-2 announced it was terminating the agreement, citing the contractors' refusal to fulfil their obligations. Tecnimont and MT Russia then initiated international arbitration proceedings in London against EuroChem, which filed a counterclaim.
The legal proceedings are ongoing and are not expected to end before second quarter 2026, MT Russia reported in its financial statements signed in April 2025. MT Russia stated then that it believed the contract was terminated on the instigation of EuroChem, while EuroChem claims that the contract was terminated due to the contractor's failure to fulfil its obligations. According to MT Russia, its accounts payable to EuroChem Severo-Zapad-2 amount to RUB 11.55 billion in advances received.
MT Russia LLC has been operating since 2007. Its revenue in 2024 amounted to RUB 3.3 billion (60% down on 2023), with a net loss of RUB 190 million. According to the company's financial statements, its beneficial owner is Italian citizen Fabrizio Di Amato.
Italy's Tecnimont is part of the Maire Group, headquartered in Milan. The Maire Group's market capitalisation at the end of September 2025 was €4.1 billion. Revenue for January–September 2025 amounted to €5.2 billion (27% more than in the same period the previous year), with net profit of around €205 million.
